Duntroon Information

This is about a place hardly anyone ever mentions or writes about. I think it is one of New Zealand's best kept secret.

How is it such a small seemingly non-event town in the middle of nowhere prompts a web page all by itself. Well let me tell you this is a place to stop. A couple of very important reasons, one the bright pink building housing the Flying Pig Cafe is a good place to start. Not bad coffee and above excellence in muffins. Didn't get the opportunity to sample the rest of the food but wouldn't be afraid to say it would be on the same level as we experienced.

Next door is an old building that has an ancient working blacksmith forge. Walking on down the street in this one-horse town (saying this in levity) is one of the most unique experiences offered in all of New Zealand: the Vanished World Centre. Somewhere around 25 million years ago what is now land mass around Duntroon was the ocean floor 100's of metres deep. The animal life of the time settled to the deeps to become forever a part of the sediment and a part of history. Now open farm land with giant rocks and limestone outcroppings have revealed these ancient remains and they are on display here in Duntroon.
Have you ever seen the bones of the giant toothed dolphin or the bones of a whale that swam the oceans those millions of years ago?
After a fabulous tour of the Centre grab a map and take to the fields within a few kilometres of Duntroon to explore and discover on your own. It is a true experience and one not found anywhere else.
We also recommend the Dansey's Pass Holiday Park 15 kms up the road (marked) from Duntroon for a place to stay. One of the most idyllic places to stay in the country. Nestled in the valley with a river running through that actually provides a real true swimming hole. I stood on the bank overhead and watched a trout working the pool for his morning meal. Took all I had not to make an offer at the end of my fly rod.

All in all this is a must on any tourist stop and so untouched it is unbelievable. It is not marketed and is a hidden place to most everyone. Take the time to explore. I'm letting you in on the secret.
