Westport to Granity and regional Information:

North of Westport on Route 67 you come to a town of the name of Waimanagaroa. if you want a real thrill take the road to the right to Denniston a old coal mining town high on a mountain via a good but winding road to the top where you you are above small planes as you look down. A fabulous ride and an interesting place soon to be made into a movie from a novel of the place "Denniston Rose". If you can read the book before you go. One of the best novels written. Have a look at the Denniston information and photos:

Denniston Information.

Continuing north of Westport along a a great 28km drive takes you to the small town of Granity one of our favourites in the country. Two good places to stop in the town, Steve Terry's "Drifter's Cafe" in the centre on the right. On the ocean side going north out of town "The Big Fish" be sure to stop and say hello to Kevin if he is there. You can stay the night there if you like.
Continuing north on route 67 you pass through the town of Hector. There is a country/western music museum worth stopping to see if that's your thing.
The next stop is on the north side of the Mokihinui River on the left. A narrow dirt road takes you to Gentle Annies where you can stay. No electricity (showers good though) to the campsites but do have on of the best locations where river, ocean and bush join. You'll love it! Gentle Annies
Now it is off to Karamea and north to dead end at the Heaphy Bluff the beginning of the south end of the Heaphy Track and one of the most exciting meeting of river and ocean at the DOC camp. Worth the drive over the hill from Gentle Annies.(70Km).
