Welcome to
the constantly traveling website -
Hokitika Information
Details of the
Hokitika area for your use to find
where to go, what to do, etc.
The drive north from
Pukekura to Ross the gold town where
the largest nugget of 99 ounces was found. Good fun to stop here and
have a look at the historical treasure trove and go gold panning at the
Ross Heritage centre.
The
continued drive north to Hokitika takes you through very
interesting west coast type
forest and bush. A few kilometres south of Hokitika there is a turnoff
to Lake Mahinapua
and a
DOC camp to stay overnight or just hang out for awhile. There are
plenty of camps and accomodation at Holkitika though.
Hokitika,
home to the Hokitika Wild Foods Festival the second Saturday
in March. See photos:

Also a
town with so many fine craft shops you better plan at least a
day to walk around. One of our favourites is
Sunshinz (Sunshinz
Gallery)
and
one of the finest artists in the country
Iann
Phillips,artist in sheet copper.
You
can park at the beach area in town and walk around. You won't go wrong
having a coffee at the Tin Shed cafe either or at the Cafe de Paris. It
is an exciting town full of wonderful discoveries.
They have a great Museum with exhibits of the West coast going back in
the distant past. You might want to rent a 1992 Porsch 928
for an hour to buzz around town available from Classic Car Rentals.
All in all whenever you go there it is one of the most exciting towns
in the South Island to visit.
This is definitely the spot to spend a little time and one of the
finest accommodations and holiday parks is located here: Shining Star
Beachfront Accommodations
Highly recommended.
