From Denniston to the Heaphy Track at Wekakura Point north of Karamea...

Details of Karamea for your use to find where to go, what to do, etc.

The drive north from Westport taking you along one of the most compelling drives in the country. From Westport Route 67 takes you through interesting small West Coast communities such as Granity and Hector that are worth stopping at.
After you cross the Makihinui River the road turns inland until reaching Little Wanganui and finally coming to its end at Kohaihai Bluff north of Karamea. There is a DoC camp there and is the beginning or ending depending of the world famous Heaphy Track that goes through th Kahurangi National Park to end up on the Aorere River outside of Takaka in Golden Bay.
The drive to this point is worth it just to watch the Heaphy River empty into the ocean both fighting to keep their dominance during the tidal changes.
Be sure to take your repellant.
There are some other major walks through the Kahurangi National Park such as the Wangapeka Track out of Little Wanganui on this side.
This is wilderness made easy to access for those who are fit enough to  do the  tramping.
