Details of the Mckenzie Country for your use to find where to go, what to do, etc.

Cruising through the Mackenzie Country is great fun. The roads are quality with  lack of traffic and the scenery is world class. The major tourist community you come to is Lake Tekapo a very small place on the lake that gives it its name. The first thing you will notice is the glacial lake as you approach the town. The stunning light turquoise colour of the lakes in the high country is caused by finely ground particles of rock held in suspension that reflects the light.
At Lake Tekapo be sure to go down to the lake where the small Church of the Good Shepherd is located and where a bronze statue has been placed in tribute to the hard working sheep dog of New Zealand without which no sheep farmer could exist.

The place to stay and make a base in this area is the
Lake Tekapo Holiday Park. Right on the lake...what an ideal spot. Check out their web page.

After Lake Tekapo back onto Route 8 and on to Mount Cook. When up here you got to stay at the Glentanner Holiday Park. What a way to wake up in the morning with Mt. Cook overlooking the scenery..........
Glentanner Holiday Park.

This is one of those "have to experience" places no matter what.   No matter what the scenery is worth the drive through this part of New Zealand. Last time through when the lupines were in full bloom I took almost 400 photos that day. Just couldn't help myself. The weather was perfect and the results were stunning. Sent a bunch to family and friends who now tell me they use them on their desktop. Went up to the Mount George Observatory.....what a fantastic 360 degree view! Nothing like it anywhere else.
and fabulous coffee (Supreme Boxer blend) at the Astro cafe run by Fraser Gunn the area's best known photographer - Have a look at his website: Fraser Gunn Photographer

Don't miss this area during your travel around the country.
