On the Road to Mt. Cook

Details of the Mt Cook area for your use to find where to go, what to do, etc.

About an hour's drive on Route 80 into the Mt. Cook area.
Over 300 million years ago the earth convulsed and created what is today the Mount Cook National Park. One of the wonders of the world you can drive your camper van close to enjoy. Mount Cook is New Zealand's highest mountain at 3754 metres elevation with the Southern Alps being thrust up at the rate of 25mm a year.
Take a look around the Hermitage Hotel. It has been one of the country's top accommodations for over 100 years. At the Mount Cook Village you might want to catch a boat to explore New Zealand's largest glacier. Talk about photo opportunities! website
You can also drive almost up to the base of the Tasman Glacier on the Tasman Valley Road.
Stay the night at White Horse Hill a DOC camp. The turnoff prior to the Village on Hooker Valley Road.

A drive back out next morning takes you to Route 8 and more fabulous scenery through the Mackenzie Country to Twizal and on to Omarama. Don't forget to stop by the Mt. Cook Salmon Farm perhaps to try some of the finest in salmon.
