Welcome  to the constantly  traveling website -

The Taupo Region

The town of Taupo lying along by the North Island's largest lake, Lake Taupo, means water sports are dominate and rightly so. I have caught some of the largest trout I have ever seen in this lake and lots of them.
This region is named volcano country where in 1996 Mt. Ruapehu
erupted.  Lake Taupo was formed over 26,000 years ago  in one of the largest eruptions ever known.
South of the lake here are three great peaks, Mt. Ruapehu (2797m), the continually active symmetrical cone Mt. Ngauruhoe (2287m) and Mt. Tongariro (1967m) that is really made up of several small volcanoes some still active.
The region lying west of the Lake is known as King Country and was almost entirely populated by Maori until the late 19th century.
The Waikato River runs north from Lake Taupo to end up at the western sea south of Auckland.
If you are a skier you will find it the place to go to as Mt Ruapehu hosts the Turoa and Whakapapa ski fields on its slopes.  Whakapapa is New Zealand's largest ski field and Turoa has the biggest vertical drop in Australasia. In the summer months this area is a very popular tramping area with all levels of fitness allowed for in the tracks. There is a great many tracks and huts available with the most popular being the Tongariro Crossing that goes by the active Red Crater and allows one a view of the steaming Emerald Lakes.
The town of Taupo has  many fine accommodations and activities.  Taking Route One south  you come to Turangi. One can circle the Lake area if you take  Route 32 from here and meet up with  the roads leading back to the town.
Continuing south from Turangi turning west on Route 46 you pass the smaller body of water , Lake Rotoaira,  and meet up with Route 47 that will lead you to the resort hotel Grand Chateau and the Whakapapa Village and the small town of National Park. Continuing south on Route 4 from National Park take Route 49 back east passing through New Zealand's carrot capital, Ohakune.

From Ohakune turning south at Waiouru, New Zealand's main military base. If you come directly from Taupo south on Route One you can experience the full thrust of the Desert Road where wild horses run free in the Kaimanawa Forest and you get a good perspective of the Tongariro National Park as you drive by.

This region is very special in its landscape and lake region.  Three kms south of Taupo is the National Trout Centre hatchery. Tokaanu, west of Turangi, has thermal pools. North of Taupo is the Wairakei Thermal Valley where you can visit the Craters of the Moon and the prawn farm.

So passing through this part of New Zealand provides a lot of exciting areas to explore and enjoy. Take your time and truly see the splendour of the region.
