Far North
The
top is the very top and that is going all the way to Cape Reinga and
well worth the trip. When one gets to the last twenty-one kilometres
after Route One at Waitiki Landing the scenery is stunning from on top
of the hills out over the Tasman Sea. The road has narrowed and is no
longer sealed. This doesn't detract from the trip but actually adds to
it making one realise they are no longer in civilisation as we may know
it.
I like the idea there is a post box at the parking lot at Cape Reinga.
Makes a great photo really. The draw is watching the seas roll and
pitch around this far northern point dominated by the Cape Reinga
lighthouse.
The only other road one can travel past Waitiki Landing is to the right
that ends at the end of Spirit Bay at Kapowairua where one can camp.
For those who enjoy long walks you can take the trail
through the Mokaikai Scenic Reserve to North Cape. There is
a turn off about half way on the right that one can drive to Te
Hapua on the Parengarenga Harbour.
This is the extreme far north of New Zealand. In this
isolated northern stretch there is a holiday park at Pukenui.
The northern peninsula road, though being Route One, is called the Far
North Road. Its narrow confines are sandwiched between the Ninety Mile
Beach to the West with the forest reserve of Aupouri Forest dominating
the stretch of land. Wild horses ca be easily seen in parts of the
forest. To the East is Great Exhibition Bay north of the Rangaunu
Harbour that lies north of the town of Awanui where Route Ten comes in
from the East Coast area. The narrow peninsula that can be reached from
Route Ten north of Aurere by the Inland Road takes one out to
Cape Karikari with places to stay at Merita and Tokerau Beach that
looks back into Doubtless Bay.
