Welcome  to the constantly  traveling website -

from Napier to Wellington

Driving south from Napier between here and Dannevirke, 105 kms south,is a town with the longest place name in the world (here we go I'll try it- 85 letters), Taumataawhakatangihangakoauauotamateaturipukak
apikimaungahoronukupokaiwhenuakitanatahu, which means: "The place whereTamatea, the man with the biug knees, who slid ,climbed, an swallowed mountains, known as landeater, played his flute to his loved one."(Whew!)

Dannevirke ws settled in the 1870's by Scandinavian immigrants. The famous Norsewood socks are made just north of here.

From Dannevirke we continue south toward the Wairarapa region and the Wairarapa Valley separated from the Wellington region by the Rimutaka Range of mountains known for winds so fiece they once blew a train off the early lines that passed over.

Route 2 takes us through Masterton, Greytown, Featherston and Carterton and  a short turn off on Route 53 to Martinborough takes one into the heart of one of the top wine growing regions in New Zealand.
Every November the highlight is the area's Wine Festival.
Out of Carterton one of the major attractions are the bush walks into the 10,000 hectare Trararua Range.
From Masterton a 65 kms drive will take you to Castlepoint where the  23m lighthouse is the tallest in New Zealand.
Another side trip of interest is out of Martinborough to Lake Ferry passing by Lake Wairarapa and ending in Pallisar Bay. A drive on a dirt road  from there out to Cape Pallisar takes you the southernmost point of the North Island and the local seal colony.

After going through the Wairarapa crossing the Rimutaka Range it is now through the areas of Upper Hutt and Lower Hutt and on into the city of Wellington.
