Welcome  to the constantly  traveling website -

Wanganui to Wellington

The town of Wanganui is reached from the Taranaki region by Route 3 63 kms south of  Hawera through rolling farm land. Route 4 from the north is also a way to reach the city.
The most exciting river trip in New Zealand can be had on the Wanganui River by going north to Pipiriki. From here it is total wilderness through the Whanganui National Park. The river has a gentle gradient but boasts 239 rapids between Taumarunui and the sea. Plenty of walking tracks for those not having  desire to get on the river. This is where the movie the River Queen was filmed by the way. No roads in the park but a couple of small river settlements are there such as Jerusalem created in 1884 by a catholic mission.

Taking route 3 south the drive passes through the villages of Bulls and Sanson where it meets Route One and heads directly for Wellington passing thorough Levin and the town of Otaki. Take the time to turn in Otaki and drive the few kilometres to Otaki Beach that stretches for miles. Kapiti Island is easily seen from here.

From here it is a short drive through the small towns leading up to the city of Wellington.
