Welcome to
the constantly traveling website -
Let us introduce to you
The West Coast of the North Island
Route 12 from Maungaturoto to Kaitaia
This
is what is known as part of the Twin Coast Discovery Route. The ideal
way to see the North Island is to leave Auckland on Route One and
return via Route 12 along the west coast. Thus you go up the east and
return down the west or visa-versa if that's you desire. Just make sure
you do both.
So let's come from the extreme north after the run up the east coast
beginning after the run to Cape Reinga. Out of Kaitaia take Route
10 to the coast at Ahipara then on south until reaching Route
12.
Just southwest of the junction you will reach the Hokiana Harbour and
the settlements of Oponoi and Omapere.
Now we go on south to the Waipoua Forest to see the world famous Kauri
tree that is over 1200 years old. Kauri was the early history of this
area and all of New Zealand once.
Tane
Mahuta(God of the
Forest)
is
51.5metres high, 13.5 metres girth estimated at 1200
years old. The road leads through the forest and a walking track is
provided to the large kauri.
Kauri timber
was once the major export of New Zealand as was the kauri gum. In 1899
over 11,000 tonnes of gum were exported and used for making
varnish. Synthetics put a stop to the gum digging. When in this
part of New Zealand you have to stop at the Kauri Museum.
Now on
south to Dargaville and a stop at the Baylys Beach Holiday Park to
enjoy a stay on the fabulous Ripiro Beach. Have a look at what is in
store for you there: Baylys
Beach Holiday Park. This is a must
stay on the 100kms of unspoiled beach. Lots of activities provided. How
about a quad bike hire? or perhaps on horseback? or just a leisurely
walk
Now it is
to take Route 12 out of Dargaville and re-connect with Route One at
Brynderwyn. The next 30 kms from Dargaville to Ruawai is mostly
along the river. You can't miss Tokatoka, an ancient 180metre high
volcanic plug that can be climbed and will give you a world-class
view. Turn on the road at the Tokatoka Tavern for access.
