Wellington

The city of Wellington is one of my favourite places in New Zealand. I spent eight years there and enjoyed the city and its environs completely.
Everything is available and usually in walking distance when in the downtown area.
The best in entertainment, night life, restaurants and cafes. Known as the coffee capital  with more cafes per capita than New York and most of them of top barista quality and roast.
Surrounded by hills the city is tucked in beside one of the finest deep-water harbours. It is the nation's capital and all the government buildings and offices are downtown with our Parliament lodged in the building known as the Beehive so named for its shape.
The National Museum of Te Papa is on the waterfront and is a must to visit. The main shopping streets are Lambton Quay and Willis streets with  funky Cuba Street being a special place to visit.
The restaurant and nigh life happens on Courtney Place and side streets such as Blair and Allen streets.
The Information Centre is in Civic Square on Wakefield Street. The walk from Civic Square to the watefront really is most impressive.
The cable car runs 610meters from Lambton Quay rising 122meters to the suburb of Kelburn and provides a stunning vista of the city. plus a chance to walk through the fabulus Botanic Gardens.
If you like old buildings it is a must to visit the Old St. Paul's Church on Mulgrave Street. The wooden building was built in 1888 in French Gothic style.

Wellington the jumping off place to the South Island  should be given as much time as you can and you will see why it is such a great city.
